Mystery Schools
Environmental lawyer Gus Speth said, "I used to think the top environmental problems were biodiversity loss, ecosystem collapse, and climate change, I thought that with thirty years of good science we could address those problems. But I was wrong. The top environmental problems are selfishness, greed, and apathy. . . and to deal with those we need a spiritual and cultural transformation, and we scientists don’t know how to do that."
The depth psychologist Bill Plotkin left the narrow confines of academia to find his calling as a wilderness guide who assists people in discovering their uniqueness and clarify what will benefit their communities when they return to everyday life. Mystery schools of all shapes and sizes are starting to emerge as wayshowers in an era where we recognise the limitations of technology and rationalism.
During our current era of cultural collapse, we must create contemporary forms of mystery schools. When there is an absence or dearth of healthy, mature cultures to serve as the social and spiritual environment for the individual journey of soul initiation, we must create independent social and spiritual settings that serve as greenhouses for engendering and nurturing the seeds of cultural renaissance, seeds that emerge from revelatory experience. These mystery schools must be led by Adults and Elders who’ve been called by Mystery to serve as soul-initiation guides.
At heart, a Mystery School is a place that cultivates a devotional way of life and assists in the discovery of the mysteries of life. Concerned that the purely intellectual exploration was stifled and limiting, Pythagoras toured other countries. He was impressed with Egypt’s mystery schools and their focus on esoteric knowledge for the purpose of spiritual evolution. The teachings revolved around self-realisation which extended to service to society.
For almost 30 years, Dr Jean Houston ran a modern day mystery school that offered programs in cross-cultural mythic and spiritual studies — dedicated to teaching history, philosophy, the new physics, psychology, anthropology, myth and the many dimensions of our human potential.
Bill Plotkin’s school takes participants on vision quests and soul initiations using nature based learning in conjunction with depth psychology.
Be it courses in metaphysics, spiritual awakening, energy healing or a myriad of other learning styles, what unites different mystery schools is their emphasis on questioning our programming and social conditioning in order to discover our authentic selves and better integrate who we are with the life we live.
Labyrinth Walk
The labyrinth is one of the most ancient symbols of humanity, dating back to 2500 B.C.E. and older. It continues to express a universal, archetypal longing for the sacred.
Labyrinths, by design, are symbolic of our intestines. In turn, they reflect the ways in which we digest our experiences, offering an invitation to let go and release all that is no longer serving us and opening us to receive deeper spiritual nourishment and move forward on an aligned path.
A maze is an irregular network of paths designed to baffle your attempts to find the centre. It contrasts with a labyrinth, which is designed to take you to the centre. They gentle camber and are tilted to guide you. A labyrinth progressively takes you closer and closer toward the womb altar. For those who are sensitive, the archetypal journey guides them toward their centre, true north or grail.
Our labyrinth walk can be taken in the traditional manner or it can be done in conjunction with the major arcana tarot soul's journey, comprising the 22 archetypes that take us from the ignorance of the Fool through to the integration of the World.

Numerology
Polaris, The North Star, is renowned for remaining still in our sky while the whole northern sky moves around it.
It is not nearly the brightest star but its value comes from its fixity.
For centuries people have relied on it to sail the seas and cross trackless deserts without losing their bearings.
Being a yellow supergiant star shining with the luminosity of 2500 suns, it is easy to find the Pole Star.
When it comes to finding our internal North Star it can prove a lot more challenging.
Numerology holds that our date of birth and our name offers a blueprint to better understand our lives.
Combining the seasonal, or cyclical nature of life with mathematics, it helps makes sense of the present while offering insights into what the future holds.
Numbers are the highest degree of knowledge. It is knowledge itself. - Plato
Astrology
Astrology also draws on one's date of birth to illuminate our North Star.
Where numerology takes into account one's name, astrology looks at your place of birth to reveal the placement of the planets.
Twins are often very similar in nature due to sharing planetary placements but the influence of differing names colours them more uniquely.
When you integrate the esoteric sciences of numerology & astrology with the secular sciences of psychology & sociology, you start to get a good deal of insight into what values, passions and purpose is truly your own and what are inherited.
For as Jung and other great thinkers have recognised, the rational mind can only take us so far.
Left brained awareness helps anchor us in the here and now, similarly like the ego grounds the soul when it comes to our psyches.
The poet Theodore Roethke captured how a right brained awareness gathered from numerology with astrology prevents us from getting too bogged down by survival and immediate concerns:
"A wave of Time hangs motionless on this particular shore.
I notice a tree, arsenical grey in the light, or the slow
Wheel of the stars, the Great Bear glittering colder than snow,
And remember there was something else I was hoping for."
